Material from The Price: Goblin Fruits

Originally published June 27, 2014

In the course of my Changeling: the Lost game, The Price, I invented a number of tokens, trifles, and Goblin Fruits for them to use and trade. Here is a sample of the Goblin Fruits, their descriptions and effects.

Apple Wort

This strange fruit resembles an apple mixed with a prune. Growing from vines, the fruit begins as a glossy red apple but turns wrinkled and soft at the end. Biting down reveals a seed filled core like a fig that tastes like sweet but tart apple.

Eating one restores 1 Glamour.

Cheese Melon

This waxy spherical fruit contains a center of soft and fragrant cheese. With a taste like provolone, cheese melons grow in dimly lit portions of the Hedge from leafless vines.

The cheese melon has no appreciable benefits beyond being a good source of calcium.

Death Melon

DeathMelon
A white squash-like fruit found commonly in the markets of the Under-Hedge, it has a distinctive skull shape. The taste has been compared to eating crunchy pepto bismol.

Eating one restores 1 Willpower point.

Ice Apples

iceapple
Found only in the highest branches of the Hedge, this bluish-green apple always tastes cold and crisp. Never larger than a two inches across, these small fruits have a long shelf life with natural cooling.

Eating this tiny sour fruit restores 1 Glamour.

Murple

Murple
The aptly named murple resembles a purple apple. The taste is distinctive, not quite grape, not quite pure sweetness, with a hint of eggplant. It's been described as "purple".

This incredibly juicy fruit allows one to regain 1 Glamour.

Peartato

peartato
Another product of the Under-Hedge, the peartato is an orangish tuber, like a sweet potato, but crisp and juicy. The flavor reminds one of a pear and at the same time evokes memories of books and schoolwork.

Eating a peartato grants a +1 bonus to Study or Academics rolls for one scene.

Redberry

redberry
Growing in brambles like blueberries, these fruits can be treacherous to the unwary. A single prick of the thorns on the surrounding vines induces an unnatural lethargy, causing a character to feel as if they have not slept for a full night. They suffer a -2 penalty to all actions until they get a chance to rest.

The reward for these berries is meager. If one eats a few dozen of the fruits they can gain 1 Glamour.

Squid Ink Tubers

These rare tubers grow in the high trees of the Wilds. With a pale tan skin, their interior is full of a black juice. The juice itself tastes horrible and will stain anything it touches. It can be boiled down however to make a magical paint. This paint in turn can be used to create hedge spun paintings that lead into the Hedge.
