A Plague of Spiders: Protective Bean Counter

Originally published October 31, 2014

For the next 6 weeks, I'll be presenting a Hunter: the Vigil convention game I ran for DunDraCon 2014. Entitled Retrieval Team Zeta: A Plague of Spiders and using the new World of Darkness 2nd edition rules, it features a cell of Cheiron Group hunters as they engage in one of their first missions as a team. As might be expected casualties may be high. A full listing of available articles on this adventure can be found here.

Today I'll present an alternate leader of this team, a bean counter transferred from Accounting. Short and unassuming, they might actually be the better leader.

Like all of the characters, I did not give him or her a name leave that and much of the character's physical description to the player. What has been decided is the background, skills and personality of the character.

Protective Bean Counter

Employee Number A012419950187

Background: You've been in administration for half of your life. From secretarial positions to management, you've always ensured your department is run efficiently and responsibly. When you took over accounting last year, you made sure the right people were advanced and the deadwood cut out. Then you set your sights on other departments.

That was a mistake. The executives did not like you pointing out how much waste was going on in R&D. They demoted you to the Retrieval Department.

Fighting monsters is different from winning funding arguments. At least the monsters complain less. You are practical and you can already see a large amount of waste that can be cleared up: agents sent into the field with insufficient training, experimental implants and drugs wasted on operatives who won't survive the mission, and a callous disregard for human resources. You are sure if you can lower turnover rate and boost productivity, the executives will have to see you are more useful in the office.

Sample Names: Phil Shuttlebower, Srvani Singh, Jane Peterson

Professional Training: Through years of work, you have become an expert administrator.
  • Networking: You have contacts among hospital administrators and government secretaries.
  • Continuing Education: gain 9-agains when rolling Academics and Persuasion.
Tactics: Net, System Shock
