Adventure: A Plague of Spiders

Originally published October 27, 2014

For the next 6 weeks, I'll be presenting a convention game I ran for DunDraCon 2014. Entitled Retrieval Team Zeta: A Plague of Spiders and using the new World of Darkness 2nd edition rules, it features a cell of Cheiron Group hunters as they engage in one of their first missions as a team. As might be expected casualties may be high. A full listing of available articles on this adventure can be found here.

This week we'll look at the convention book description and our list of characters. This game was intended as part of a pair so there is a list of alternate characters to include should the primary characters die in the first adventure.

Welcome to the team. Your mission is to investigate a cerebral parasite outbreak in Cincinnati and retrieve samples from the infected. Funeral arrangements for former team members will be Sunday.

Full Description

Welcome new team members to Retrieval Team Zeta. Take a seat next to the surviving members. Your mission is to investigate a possible outbreak of cerebral parasites in Cincinnati and to retrieve samples from the infected. There exists the possibility of hostile and larger than average arachnids. Samples of these creatures or any human-arachnid hybrids will result in an increased bonus. Funeral arrangements for former team members to be held this weekend.

Retrieval Team Zeta Roster (Primary)

This was part of a handout I gave before the game. The notes are essentially comments by management as they put together the plans.

There is a scheme to the employee numbers. The letters indicate original department: A for Accounting, B for R&D, C for corporate, D for Maintenance, M for Marketing. R for Retrieval, S for Security, and X for experimental subject. The next 8 letters indicate starting date of employment. The last four are random. The game takes place in 2011.

  • Employee Number R020420041088: veteran monster hunter, former team leader out of traction, not likely to reach retirement
  • Employee Number C070520080116: transfer from management, a real go getter, 4 promotions in 3 years, freaked out a bit during the training session
  • Employee Number D030620055311: accidental transfer from maintenance, HR needs to be better about those misspelled names, had the twitcher installed before error realized
  • Employee Number R101420103523: cyptozoological expert, mission focused, may be issues when realizes can't publish results
  • Employee Number C021420101340: transfer from secretarial staff, eager to learn, thinks we don't know about the missing files we planted
  • Employee Number S021120098541: security agent, veteran of 1 mission, only one who walked away, may be mentally fragile

Retrieval Team Zeta Roster (Supplemental)

  • Employee Number A012419950187: former administrator, zealous attention to detail, pissed off the high ups
  • Employee Number M082920098592: transfer from marketing, missed sales target so exercised clause 23b, applying self well
  • Employee Number X071220100140: test subject for the BSNX-8 line, body chemistry reacting much better than the other subjects, very good at self reports, would be useful on this mission
  • Employee Number B081320096671: scientist who wants to work in the field, mixed results in lab, BSNX line caused permanent psychosis in 90% of subjects, was undeterred by training exercise
  • Employee Number C121620089135: lingering PR disaster, murders covered up but need to salvage situation somehow, turn talents to appropriate targets
  • Employee Number R031520113734: ex-military suffering PSTD, responding well to drug therapy, only 40% chance of self-destructive behavior
